Indeed. I know I would have been offended is someone used my artwork to say that I'll have doomed relationships for something I'm passionate towards. It's not that we're oversensitive. Bryke disrespected a lot of fans for doing that. Using their artwork to mock and basically call them stupid is just low. This is like the Grey Delisle thing again. The people who work for the show put their offensive jokes on the web and don't bother to consider what the people who have any relevance might think and feel of it. Ahh, Grey Delisle. Was a little bummed when she came out as a Kataang shiipper--that is, until she started showing her true colors.

I think the thing that really bugged me about the video is how mean-spirited it was. They went out of their way to mock and disrespect fans over ship pairings. They put effort into being jerks.
it wasn't like a spur of the moment off hand comment - they took time to make that video and never at any point, did they say to themselves - wow, telling at least half our fandom that we think they will have doomed relationships...it's not really funny is it? Maybe we should try make a joke everyone can enjoy.
the "lol just joking defense" doesn't cut much ice with me. It's sort of like saying "I'm not sexist but...." a flmisy disclaimer that it is joke does not make it okay.
although it did give me a better perspective on how bryke actually see Zutara and why they are so down on it. they think what they portrayed in the video ( a couple that doesn't commincate well and just makes out all the time) is what Zutara actually is - but they didn't realise that they had actually captured Maiko to a T.
they were mocking the dynamics of their own canon ships without realising.

I don't know if I could ever watch that video. I think I'd combust with rage.
I think Bryke should just stay away from romance in general. They clearly can't handle it.

Valid point. Just give us enough hints, but not actual romance, to play around with. Give people good chemistry but not lovin on each other. But seriously. You guys are right about Maiko. I detest canon Maiko and I'm not a big fan of canon Kataang as in seen in the thing we shall not mention (I think we should start referring to the Promise as this - like In HP - Voldemort, he who shall not be named). It's just ridiculous how they portray it! I'm not opposed to well written fanfics of either, though I much more strongly support Zutara as it's my OTP. And it just plain makes sense. You're right. ALL they do is communicate, for better or for worse. Katara and Zuko will talk to each other even when she's fuming or when he's trying to capture her!

Okay the comic that will not be named is just ridiculously awful. it is almost so bad it's good.
I'm glad that we can mock it in peace over here. but I feel bad for canon-shippers. They are actually supposed to like that peice of twaddle. We Zutarians are always the nay-sayers, but the canon-thumpers are meant to think that everything that bryke make is spun gold. I pity them and want to expose them to good literature.
it's like the romance is Korra. it is so bad - but it does valiadate my opinion that bryke cannot write a healthy, entertaining romantic dynamic to save themselves.
see there is a silver sandwich.

They wrote Sokka and Suki's relationship alright, but I don't think they really had a great interest in "building up" that particular romance since they were so focused on Aang's romance with Katara, and for some reason thought that they had to get Zuko out of the way of it by planting Mai on his face. Soooooo, I guess what I'm to say is, that by treating Sokka and Suki with a certain absentmindedness, they actually did quite well with them. Funny how the "planned" and "thought out" romances are the ones that got blotched up, and the ones that they don't really invest themselves in turn out beautifully. Ironic.

I actually think the romance in LOK was leaps and bounds better than ATLA, even with the fact that they did it in 12 episodes. I mean it wasn't perfect, but maybe it's just through my personal experiences that I was able to find ALL the characters realistic in how they handled relationships--Korra, Mako, Bolin, Asami, Tenzin, Pema, Lin. All of them were kind of part of the romantic plotlines.
I think the biggest problem with LOK is that they don't offer enough perspectives. We pretty much see everyone's side but Mako, really. In the sense of understanding his position in the whole thing. He was pretty much in a position that had no easy way out and I think he handled it exactly how I expected for his character, his history, his personality, the things at stake, etc.
Quite frankly, I think a lot of people just don't attempt to understand his perspective.

Glad I'm not the only one who feels that way, lol. I had so many gripes about the ATLA romance and not much at all with LOK. At least there was mutal chemistry and interest with Makorra and Masami. Can't say the same with Kataang or Maiko.
I connected with Mako right away too. You could just tell by his demeanor that this was a guy who has little to no help his entire life and is used to shouldering everything on his own. It doesn't excuse his relationship misteps, but I think it explains why he was so adament in dating Asami and not Korra.
It really comes down to the fact that dating Korra threatens his chances of winning, which threatens the chance for him to protect and care for Bolin and himself. That's why dating a teammate is a bad idea to him. Especially so because her personality alone rattles his safe and protective shield he's built around himself and Bolin. In his mind, daitng Korra could threaten everything he's worked for. So he pushes his feelings for her away, and dates Asami. Because why not? He likes her. He's attracted to her, she's kind, nice, caring, even helps him with his goal of winning by sponsoring his team. But the heart doesn't always listen to the mind, and that's what happened. He fell for her despite his "better judgement."
I do think the writers dragged out the fallout of Mako and Asami too much. A break up in EP10 in the kitchen makes the most sense. It needed to happen then. But they dragged it out, just like they did with Aang and Katara. I mean Aang and Katara kiss before the eclipse and NEVER talk about it again? Then Aang says during the play "we kissed and I thought we would be together and we werent." Lol like really? You thought that, but didn't think you should bring it up anytime soon?
