What do you guys think about the comic? Is it fail, or do you actually read it?

I also tactically ignore it - just from what I've heard, it butchers every single character. Everyone is a shadow of their former self, or their personality has to be inverted, all for a silly storyline to make sense. after seeing a few panels I decided it wasn't worth my time.
saw a few panels and just no.
what happened to Katara's charater was just shameful - she was just regulated to Aang's arm candy and they had to make her extra, irrationally violently protective over Aang. so they have demonlished one the most important parts of her character - her indepedance and desire for equality and exaggerated her protectiveness (but only in relation to Aang) to the point where she is pretty much ready to attack people unprovoked for her Aangy.
Katara had her protective moments - but she also kept a cool head in a crisis, and Yon Rha aside, wasn't prone to trying to Actually Hurt people unprovoked.
I can't even talk about what they did to zuko's character.
his character development and arc was one of the best things in ATLA - and to see that chucked out to create some really shitty impalusible drama (when there would alreayd be plentiful organic sources of drama) just gets my goolies!
so the promise doesn't exits for me either. I magically handwave it away.

I gave it a chance right up until Katara and Aang were egregiously calling each other 'sweetie' all over the place. Mind you, Kataang is fine too, but 'SWEETIE'? COME ON. SERIOUSLY? SERIOUSLY. 'SWEETIE'. Never mind the fact that everyone's still tweenagers... 'SWEETIE'?! I can see them giving each other pet names but honestly, I think they'd either stick to the relatively un-silly side of nicknames or go all the way into ridiculousland. 'Sweetie' just gives me the oogies. Basically the only thing I took away from the Promise was Zuko's propensity to faint and be out for a couple days after making Major Life Decisions (tm). And then I just use it to support my theory about how Zuko has an unusually strong/reactive immune system, and those fainting spells are actually brought about by cytokine cascades. ...but that's me being a biology major all over the place.

The Promise was written by Azula as a way to get back at Zuko and the gaang for ruining her plans. Only explanation.
I own the second volume (I picked it up on a whim while I was at a bookstore) and every time I read it, a little piece of me dies inside. I think, "These are not the characters I love. This is not the Avatar I know."
I also can't believe that Aang would fight tooth and nail not to kill Ozai, who is clearly the most evil person in the show, but would consider killing Zuko, his own friend. Someone who had left everything he'd known and gave up everything he thought he ever wanted to do what was right.
So, what? He won't listen to Zuko when he tells him to kill his father, but he'll listen to Zuko when he tells him end his own life? That's messed up.

Lol, everybody's basically said everything that needs to be said. It was one giant OOC-fest. Completely inconsistent with everything we know about these characters. Like really bad fanfiction or something.

It offends me by how illogical it is. It just runs about committing character assassination, so I don't even acknowledge it as canon.

I saw a few pages and thought, "what the flippin' heck?!" It's just... so completely bad. It's like a fanfiction written by an overly-passionate Kataanger that got put into comicbook-form. I mean, all of that "sweetie" crap between Katara and Aang, along with the insane amount of possessiveness they show toward one another - especially in dangerous situations, plus the hating on Zuko? Yes, I do believe there was hatred for Zuko in this comic, since Katara was so eager to end him, and even the all-peaceful Aang seemed quite eager to take his life as well. "I couldn't possibly kill your father, Zuko! That would be wrong - I could never kill anyone. Wait, kill you? Sure. I'm down with that."
Ugh. Yeah, not the Avatar series I watched for three seasons. As far as I'm concerned, that comic doesn't exist. Character assassination at it's best. Or worst. Whatever way you look at it. Very bad for the characters, anyway.

Yeah, I ignore it as well. And as annoying as Kataang is in it, it's not even about shipping at this point. I even feel bad for canon shippers; as Zutarians we're not expected to like canon or even take it into consideration much, but they are actually supposed to be happy about this.

Zuko's going all ...weird... And Aang is just... I don't even know how to explain it... It's horrifying. And the sickening mushiness between Katara and Aang is just terrifying too...Katara get's no action at all.And there's even weird Zuki moments. I mean I can tolerate Kataang and maiko if it's reasonable but this is just going a bit too far.

Oh god. The Zuki weirdness is one of the things that bothered me the most about The Promise. I mean, basically everything bothered me, but Zuki weirdness is somewhere in the top 5. (Poor characterisation all around is probably number 1.)
I mean, I don't even recall them saying much of anything to each other throughout the show, and now Sukki's all, "he seems so lonely" (insert wistful expression here). Obviously she would have had to converse with him at some point since the Kyoshi Warriors were babysitting him, but I just find it far-fetched that she would get all soppy over him. (She doesn't even get soppy over Sokka!)
