Here's a question: Why is it called "The Promise"? I never read enough of it to find this out (I couldn't - heck, I still can't). So, anyone know? It's based on the premise that Zuko asks Aang to promise him that he'll 'end him' if he winds up like his father, and Aang agrees to the promise. So really, it's all quite stupid. I had a feeling that was it. Ugh. Making a whole comic based on Zuko's friends trying to kill him (and showing no conflicted feelings about it, either). Poor Zuko, he deserved better than that. All the characters did.

It shouldn't have happened.
Okay, so this idea that Zuko needed a safety net from Aang to begin with is really ‘off’. You know why? Because KATARA was his ‘safety net’ back in WAT. And that was to ensure he stayed on the right path. If he went backwards, he would die. She would make sure of that. And what happened? He proved himself TO HER. Proved that he would always do his best for what was right. Even took on Azula alone so that Katara wouldn’t get hurt. In the end, it was all about making sure he followed through, completely and totally.
So tell me this- why would Aang have to be Zuko’s safety net when Katara was more than sufficient to begin with?
When he was putting Aang on the spot with that promise (uh, why would he do that with AANG, the person who couldn’t even kill HIS FATHER?), why didn’t Katara step up and say something? Like:
‘Look Zuko, if someone’s going to ‘end you’, it would be me, and if you were worth ‘ending’ I’d have done it a long time ago. Trust me.’
‘Let me help you. I can give you perspective that nobody else in the Fire Nation can. If you ‘slip’, I can give you a push in the right direction. And hey, if it keeps you in check, it’s good for everybody else too.’
‘Besides, you’re a good friend to me. I wouldn’t want to see you struggle with this on your own. And I’m sure Aang wouldn’t, either. What’s the use of leaving you to your own devices only to kill you when things get out of hand? Who would do that? You need support so that things don’t get that bad in the first place.’
‘Appoint me whatever role you can, and I’ll do whatever it takes to see this through with you.’
Honestly? I think they could have made a great partnership post war. Yes it would be fucking HARD but leaving Zuko to deal with shit on his own? With someone who couldn’t even get THROUGH to him let alone help him make the right choices? It’s bad for everybody involved, Zuko especially. And that’s without even degrading his character the way they did by having him willingly talk to fucking OZAI and asking for his advice on how to cope on the throne. See, if Katara were there, she’d be all:
‘Zuko, are you crazy? You know how that guy slept peacefully on the throne? Because he didn’t care about the people involved. He may have ‘experience’ but of what exactly? Experience of being a really crappy Fire Lord. And that’s not the kind of ‘experience wisdom’ you need.’
Then he would snap out of it and agree because, YOU KNOW, the reason he spoke out of turn was because he disagreed strongly with sacrificing peoples’ lives for no good reason. Besides, Ozai doesn’t have the wisdom of experience when it comes to peacetime. No, all he’s been good at is WAR. And that’s not what they’re trying to accomplish.
Ridiculous. Katara becomes Aang's 'yes girl', and she's supporting HIM OVER THIS FUCKING PROMISE. Sure, because the real Katara wouldn't give two shits about Zuko! Sure, because the real Katara wouldn't be down on bended knees seeing the insecure boy unable to face what he's done to his uncle, and reassuring him that he's earnest and worthy of forgiveness. Sure, THIS Katara would certainly let 'fate take its course' and just leave him to fuck up when he's so insecure of fucking up. No, she wouldn't. Why would they write that shit just to 'validate her being by Aang's side more'? When you think about it, it makes so much more sense for her to be at Zuko's side, because Aang doesn't look like he needs any fucking help. He's got the rest of the team. The rest of the team weren't as motivating to Zuko as Katara was. Katara was, after all, Zuko's primary 'safety net'. And it's got him so far, so why fucking stop now?
It's in Katara's best interests - and EVERYONE'S- to be supportive of the Fire Lord. So that's what the comic should have had her do, even if it meant being apart from her 'one true love' that was Aang. Because if they were truly meant to be, she would be shown going back to him in the end.
