He's a little bit awkward and he's a little bit of a sassypants, but it really just depends on who he's with, and the environment he's in I think this is it mostly. It depends on the who, what, when, where, why, and how. Like if it's uncomfortable as you said, he'll be more awkward as we all are.

He's definitely more awkward with strangers/near strangers. But he has that adorkable sassy side of him too.

Zuko's sass is one of my favorite things on the planet haha I also just don't like it when people give Zuko and Katara last names. They aren't given surnames in the show, and the ones people come up with sometimes seem very artificial and stilted. Have you guys seen this around?

If you can avoid it, do. They usually would call him "My Lord", "Fire Lord", "Fire Lord Zuko", "Your Majesty" or something like that. No last name needed. Toph has one. There we go. That's fine. WE can use hers. Bei Fong badassery (I'm a fan of Toph too. ). Anyone else? No thanks. Not needed.

I'm okay with surnames in modern AU fics, but I hate them in fics set during the same time period as the show.
Also, I hate when authors write the characters calling each other by nicknames. "Kat," "Tara," and "Zuke" come to mind, and they completely ruin the flow of the story for me because I hate it so much and it's OUT OF CHARACTER. The only person in the entire series who called anyone by a nickname was Azula who called Zuko "Zuzu," and he LOATHED it. Why would he suddenly be okay with anyone calling him something as ridiculous as "Zuke?" And ugh... Just... NO!

Why would he suddenly be okay with anyone calling him something as ridiculous as "Zuke?" And ugh... Just... NO! I can deal with it, as much as it may suck, in terms of Modern AUs. But as far as nicknames, I can't think of one for Zuko. Because his name is so short. And it doesn't lend any good nicknames to it. I can see Azula still calling him Zuzu because she always has. Lol. But I don't mind if, after time, Zuko calls her Tara or Kat or something. and I've seen some people have Hakoda call her Kit-Kat and I think it's cute in that case. But to me, nicknames are fine. Personal perhaps, or common. I mean for example - I didn't answer to my given name at ALL until I was in university. I still think of myself by a nickname. So to me, Nicknames are fine so long as well thought out, well placed, in character as developed in the fic. And so long as the nicknames make sense.

I haven't read "Rise of One" yet (I hate starting incomplete fics... been disappointed too many times in the past), so I have no clue what you're referencing... ^^_^^;;
Maybe it's just that I hate nicknames for myself. My name is Kathryn, and while my childhood nickname was Katie (so family still address me as such) and my high school nickname was Kat (which a few high school buddies still address me by), I have been called Kate, Kath, Ryn, and pretty much any other name under the sun. I don't FEEL like a Katie, a Kat, or a Ryn, and I hate, no... I loathe being called Kate or Kath. It's just... It's not me, and I don't like the sound of them, so don't call me those names. Likewise with Katara... For me, she doesn't feel like a Kat (which doesn't work anyway because of how her name is pronounced... It would be more like Kut which is lame nickname), and she's not a "Tara" by any stretch of my imagination, so it's just really jarring for me to see nicknames for characters in fanfiction because it just... doesn't fit my image of them. Names should work with the person. If I've known someone my whole life as a James, he's not a Jim. That's why I don't freak out when people who knew me as Katie or Kat still call me that to this day, but I don't want people I'm meeting addressing me by those names... It just... blah...
Maybe I just have a giant stick up my butt. hahahah

But until Uni/College I never answered to it. You only called me that upon pain of death. Lol. I only answered to a nickname. My family has called me Katie all my life and I still think of myself that way. The kids I nanny for call me Kate. My dad's side of the family calls me Kate or Katie. I've had a few friends refer to me as Kat. Others as Kai. TO me, I enjoy the nicknames. So I can see Tara more than Kat for Katara. I like the whole Hakoda calling her Kit-Kat thing. I wish I knew where I saw that. Lol. But it's cute. And my dad calls me a silly nickname that I'm slightly embarrassed by. So I can get that kinda thing.

For nicknames and last names, if the situation requires one.(Like in AU fics.) Then I can stand it . But in the ATLA universe, not so much.
And Kaoru is just a pen name . lol. One of my guy friends gave it too me cuz I was too tomboyish and Kaoru could work for both genders.
My name is Arisa but people have always called me Risa .
