I hate stories where Katara is in love with Zuko (This isn't the bad bit) and she's with Aang, so what she does is have a spaz at Aang with the following arguments:
"I need a man." "You're a kid." "I'm like your mum." "Go away Aang I want my space!"
I've even seen:
"I hate you!" "How could you do that to Zuko!?" "I love Zuko and I never loved you! I just felt pressured to."
Because the thing is, I may prefer Zutara, but I love Aang so I always just want to jump into the Fanfiction and thwack Fanfiction Katara around the head.
The other thing is, even if Katara did love Zuko and she was with Aang, she would NEVER say anything like that. It's just not in her personality. Katara would let him down gently with reassuring comfort and she probably wouldn't even leave Aang until he approved.
Finally, Fanfiction authors need to remember that they're writing about the characters of ATLA not themselves, so personal views should be kept out of the fanfiction unless it's how the character does act.

I've had my fair share of Tophs. Haha! I've been called some things that it's like HOW did you get that? But not any quite as talented with nicknames as Toph. XD I would be amused at any such nickname that I received but it'd be a badge of honor. But yea. I get it. Some people prefer full names. Because to me, Tara makes sense. Perhaps that's because in itself, in our world, it's a name. I know Tah-ras (pronunciation wise) and Tair-uh's (pronunciation). My cousin's name is Tara (second pronunciation). So to me, it's natural to hear such things.

It doesn't make the fanfiction enjoyable at all. And the behaviour is completely rabid. I seriously can't read fanfictions when some of the characters are WAAAAAAAAAAY out of character.

azuremoon, My great-grandpa used to call me Katie-Did (like the bug, katy-did) because my brother (three years older than me) used to get into things and get into trouble when we were little, and he'd say "Katie did it" even though I was obviously way too little and not agile enough to do things like get the peanut butter out of the cupboard from the shelf above the counter and then proceed to get it everywhere possible (the latter part, yes, the acquiring, no). hahahah
Anyway, for things like that, having a family member call a character by a cute nickname like Hakoda calling her Kit-Kat or Azula calling Zuko Zuzu isn't so bad, but friends calling friends nicknames when it isn't necessary and never happened is just out of place and bothersome to me.
avatarfreak14, I actually don't like Aang (my natural aversion to small children who act like small children, methinks, because I freakin' love Toph), but I hate fics where Katara doesn't want to be with Aang but does it to either spare his feelings or because she felt like it was expected or her duty. It's goes against her very character. I hate when she cheats on him, too. I think this is why I hated "Five" so freaking much... It just made me angry. I got no feels from it at all except for irritated gaggy ones.
boogum, oh wow! I almost missed what you did there! Except I didn't. :: chuckles ::
Yes! It's how they feel. It's all about the feel!
Also, I already read the "Black Games" and I'm super angry I did because I'm having a hell of a time resisting "Rise of One" as a result, but it's not complete... I shouldn't have even touched tBG because I KNEW, I freaking KNEW, it wasn't a completed story. It's the same reason why I hate reading regular book series that aren't finished. It was hard enough with Harry Potter. I can't do that crap again. hahahah

kathrynlacey I understand that. My dad calls me Katie-cakes. Lol. I thought in turn I'd share the silly. Family is indeed one thing. But friends? My friends have come up with some of my nicknames - name related and otherwise. It sounds like part of this is personal preference. You seem to dislike being called by nicknames. And I like them. Also - your aversion to small children? I still don't get when people have that. XD I'm a nanny. I used to teach preschool. I taught abroad. Volunteered with kids of all ages. Babysat. I'm the one with the younger kids always. I love it. avatarfreak14 Well part of the whole point of faniction IS personal preference or views of some variety. That's what fanfiction is. But I'm assuming you're very much a fan of in character? Some consider Zutara OOC. So it's all perspective. By the way I by no means disagree with the whole statement about needing to not make that happen. Aang isn't a bad guy. And Katara is motherly yes, but she wouldn't be like that imo either. So yes, that is an epic fail. I also prefer in character characters too. I was just commenting on your statement. boogum *Waves* Hi friend!!!

Boogum
Yes. I agree. I hate it when characters get bashed through fanfiction because I don't think I hate any character on ATLA. Preferring ships doesn't mean hating the people of other ships. Like, I don't like Maiko that much but I love Zuko and I love Mai.

You're right that fanfictions are all basically personal views (Zutara itself is a personal view lol). But what I mean is that when people write fanfictions and they're writing through characters, they need to think about how that character might say a particular thing rather than how they would say it. Haha, yes, I'm an in character fan.

I think the difference is learning not to get all soap-boxy. I find it off-putting when I feel like I'm reading the author's words rather than the character saying his/her own feelings. I've seen Katara breaking up with Aang scenes where it works and makes sense, and then there are the ones where it's just like 'What? ?' I forgot what else I wanted to say, lol. Special child. << Lol. But yes. I mean that's definitely the case. Soap-boxes are suckish generally in fanfiction. Yeaaa. I intend to write that scene. Past tense. But at some point it will be addressed. And it's not going to be beautiful and lovey all of course i understand. Because he'll still be upset, as will she. But I hope it'll make more sense. avatarfreak14 Yeppers. Lol. See? That's the thing. We all love Zutara. =3 That we can relate. O yea. They do need to think but there will always be interpretations that vary and make no sense to some of us, or will differ to some degree. We can't all have the same head canon. =P

Agreed. ^^ Though, I have to say, I can tolerate the nickname if it's for a specific purpose and isn't used all the time, like what Mrs P did with Katara in The Rise of One. But when it's Katara or Zuko calling each other those nicknames in all seriousness and as terms of affection? Pass. Omg I hate nicknames. The only time I don't mind, like in Rise of One, is when an OC uses one since they are well, OC's lol. But when canon characters use uncanon nicknames it feels weird to me. I can't imagine Zuko calling Katara anything but Katara. My least favorite nickname is in HP. "Mione" just makes me cringe all over. About as much as "Tara" for Katara actually. [I'm not trying to offend anyone who does use nicknames, btw. I'm just not a fan when it's canon characters who do it, when they don't do it in canon. OC's don't bother me quite as much with it. ]

I loves you for trying to deal with it for meeee. I'ts not going to be rushed or all the time necessarily. But I don't mind nicknames as much as everyone else here seems to be hating on them. XD If well used I see no problem.

And it's like...sometimes, it's as simple as Zuko Fire and I just want to smash my head against the keyboard because it feels so unecessary
