ooh I love Katara because everything boogum said! she is such a complex character! there are so many different things going on with Katara that make her a joy to write. but my favourite thing about her is her enormous heart! It's hard to pick a favourite thing because she is just so awesome and i love her snarky humour, how responsible she is and how much she steps up, how stubborn she can be - but it's her kindness that I love her for.
favourite moment is actually when she is with Toph after their spa day in 'tales of ba sing se'.

Katara is definitely one of my most favorite characters in fiction. In general and ever. I love that she can be emotional enough to crack an entire giant block of ice (in feminist rage, lol) but also stable enough to keep her family from sinking into the tragedy of their loss. I love how she's this bottomless well of optimism even when it's naive and/or backfires on her. Someone once described her as the waterbender with too much rage and I cannot agree more, even though rage is not her 'defining' characteristic, it is intrinsic to her in a way that actually makes sense in context, someone who is so open and quick to trust would be equally quick to react to disappointment born out of her own misjudgement; likewise someone as fiercely protective (another beloved characteristic, her mama bear-ness), will strike back when loved ones are menaced. I love that she such a hard worker, she's a talented bender but it's her hard work that got her where she is. I especially love how she just takes charge without asking for permission or waiting for it, kid got kidnapped? we're rescuing him; we need to learn to waterbend? we're off to the North Pole where there must be teachers; baby's coming? everyone calm the fuck down, I got this. I love how her emotions power her up, her most impressive moments come from intensely emotional situations, Aang gets killed by lightening, she overruns all of their combined attackers to get to him; Hama threatens her friends, she breaks Hama's hold on her and overpowers her in the first time she bloodbends ever; Zuko is twitching on the ground in pain and possibly dying, Katara outwits and defeats Azula (arguably it might have been a lot harder had Azula been in her right mind, but the fact remains that Katara was literally inches away form getting fried when she got the upper hand) just to get to him. She makes strengths out what would conventionally be considered 'weaknesses' in female characters, or at least the 'action girl' types. Her hope, her anger (which is actually more like RAGE, lbr), her loss, her capacity for love and compassion, all of it powers and drives her on. She's in this not because it's her duty/destiny, not because of honor, not even solely because it's the right thing to do, she's here because she's trying to right wrongs that were done to her personally. And she owns that in CoD. I guess I love that, while of her detractors would call her a Mary Sue because of how 'tropey' she comes across (and when pulled apart she could be read as a list of tropes of what makes the ideal girl/love interest/heroine), when you see Katara as a whole everything makes sense because she transcends the separate ticky boxes that her traits were supposed to be. Because in the end, she's so much more than that. I'm not sure I can make a lot of sense with this one, it's just something that's very much a visceral reaction I can't articulate properly. I just have a lot of Katara feels, okay? Um... my favorite moment? Bit of a toss up between the entirety of The Desert, that moment when she overheard Sokka and Toph talking about her (because it broke my heart, I don't think she'd realized just how motherly she was to them all, and it bothered her because she's more than that, she thought they were all just friends, and they were but still, I think it hit her in her own mommie feels, like they all have her as a replacement mother figure, but she had no one to occupy that place for her. I really wanted to hug her and feed her cookies and tell her she was doing great), and when she didn't forgive Yon Rha because why would she? the people who needed and deserved her forgiveness were herself and Zuko, and in the end that's who she forgave. I like to think that a part of Katara is actually pleased that Yon Rha's life is so miserable, poetic justice in exchange for actual prosecution of crimes seems fair enough, I think. Yeah... I kinda love her. A bit.
