You, my good sir, have just officially made my day. There is literally no way I could better phrase my feelings for Ozai's situation than that which you have done above, and I hope many people read this post and thank you for the time you took to present this argument. *Bows humbly at your feet*

Thank gog, a sane writer who doesn't believe Ozai needs to be drowned in a vat of acid, clubbed over the head, boiled into stew, run through a flour mill and stabbed repeatedly in the chest and genitals for good measure. I presume you're the writer of Fire and Ice, and I also presume it's going to be an Ozai redemption fic. If so, permit me to leap headfirst into it and devour it in one go. It's about time we had Zutara fics that contained arcs other than the eponymous Zutara. That's right, I'd like some fucking plot with my porn, fluff, and romantic tension, goddammit.

I don't have anything insightful to say, really. I'm just here to giggle at carcinogeneticist's post. Wow, man, you don't hold back, do you? But I like your thoughts on Ozai's character. You're right. He's not a good guy; he wasn't raised that way. He was born to lead a nation. Feelings would always take a backseat to obligation. Always. It's been a while since I watched the series, but I think Zuko had mentioned that their family had been happy once? Maybe Ozai was a half-decent guy before all of these thoughts of power consumed his mind, heart and soul. It's quite possible that he could have had feelings for Ursa, which would explain his disdain toward Zuko after she had murdered (?) for his sake, leaving her no choice but to flee or face certain death for killing the Fire Lord, a decision which had torn her away from a life by his side. A life he, probably, planned and wanted for the both of them.
I don't like Ozai; he's a b*stard who won't admit to any wrong-doing. But if Ursa were to pay him a visit in prison, I imagine that he'd have a hard time looking her in the eyes. So I guess that it's possible that there would be some redemption for him, but not enough to give him a happy ending.

I blame burningthesun, but I'd love to see a Prince of Egypt/Moses sort of AtLA fic where baby Aang is picked up by Ursa and raised as Zuko and Azula's adopted little brother. It would really be a Zuko x Aang fic where Aang discovers who he is (an Airbender and eventually the Avatar) and the conflict he feels for his adopted family and his people.
Katara would be introduced as a slave girl/rebel who both intrigues and angers Zuko, as she constantly fights him. Meanwhile, Aang eventually learns that he is an Airbender - the same benders his "father" purged and enslaved. (Also, in this world the Avatar would not have been frozen and so canon would have to be tinkered with.) When Aang discovers who he is and what his "father" did, he leaves the palace; though Zuko tries to stop him. Katara, who also escaped, eventually finds Aang and brings him to her village to meet her father and brother. Watching Katara's family, Aang realises he wants to deliver his own - to free the Airbenders and to persuade Zuko that what their father and sister are doing is wrong.
And, of course, I'd want Zutara. I think it could be structured like the series - in a way - where Aang might be the main "hero" but there is also a heavy emphasis on Zuko, the "anti-hero" and eventual hero.

So I guess that it's possible that there would be some redemption for him, but not enough to give him a happy ending. I'm not entirely fucking sure what I was supposed to be holding back, other than maybe the logic this argument desperately needed, but thanks for the giggle, I suppose.
Anyway, I'm glad to see another sane, brilliant person here. Yes, I do think he was corrupted by power. His entire life he was stuck in the Fire Nation under Douchecaptain Azulon's iron fist. His only escape, probably, was Ursa, and if he didn't have feelings for her I will chew off my own feet. He was fucking upset when she left to the point where he had to seek comfort by a goddamn tree. A fucking. Tree. Should I ship Trozai now? Why the fuck not?
I don't want Ozai to have a happy ending. A lot of shit happened to him, and he fucked up. Zuko had a lot of shit happen to him too, and he made it out alright. I simply dislike when Ozai is hated just because he is. I like reasons. Reasons make the world go round without spiralling into the fucking sun. Ozai deserves to atone and regain his honour, then fucking die or something, as long as he's at least partially made up for his wrongs.
Iroh physically went to Ba Sing Se and oversaw the siege himself. We saw him laughing at the thought of Earth Kingdom soldiers dying, and he indirectly caused his son's own fucking death. But we forgive him because he spends the rest of his life making up for his past actions, and also because it's implied he fucking killed himself like a suicidal lemming promised cake at the bottom of a fifty-metre drop onto razor-sharp rock the size of fucking hives or something. At least Ozai only ordered the death of troops as an armchair general under the orders of his military leaders.
Anyway, thanks for being smart. I appreciate it more than I could put into words, so here, have an imaginary taco for your troubles.I blame burningthesun, but I'd love to see a Prince of Egypt/Moses sort of AtLA fic where baby Aang is picked up by Ursa and raised as Zuko and Azula's adopted little brother. Holy fucking mother of all, Prince of Egypt is my favourite film. I would write the everloving shit out of this. it has literally everything I want in a Zutara fanfic: 1) Aang is treated in a positive light beyond "whiny annoying kid" or "Katara's son"! Gaaaasp! 2) Zutara is not the only plot arc in the fic! Zuko isn't the only character with whom Katara interacts! Is this the real life? Is this just fantasy? 3) It takes a commonly abused stereoarchetype [Katara as Zuko's slave], makes it unique, and plays it right! I must be high or something; this is breaking the laws of the multiverse or some shit like that, and we're all going to fall into the singularity at any moment now.
Wow, do you mind if I actually write this shit?

I can't guarantee that I won't end up writing something like it in the future, though, since I adore the Aang x Zuko dynamic. ^_~

Such a novel concept, gasp, how could it be, bluh bluh. Could you maybe link me to some of your stuff? Sounds more fucking interesting than the work I'm doing right now.

Shall we write it together, then? Lol. I've always wanted to collaborate on a fic before, but I know how extremely difficult that would be, especially when the two authors have different writing styles.
