Don't read The Fifth Column; it has several dubcon scenes (3 in total). ;P
Zuko without his scar. This isn't really a pet peeve, but I really prefer Zuko with his scar. I understand some AUs that would have Zuko without his scar, but I'd still like it if he was scarred in some way. It's kinda what makes Zuko Zuko.

I agree that I don't mine the whole "warm breath on the skin" thing. I think it can be very sensual and such. I just don't like smelly breath... I mean, even if in real life, minty breath is okay, I don't really like reading about anyone's breath having any sort of scent... It just... I don't know... Cuts through the mood because all I can think about it how awkward it is to smell someone's breath. Wording really is everything. I don't think I've actually ever read a fanfiction where the origins of Zuko's scar is ever even discussed... Rapey Zuko doesn't really work out so well with me, either... I mean, it's one thing if he's a little forceful within the bounds of being consensual because... well... dom!Zuko is hot to me, but yeah. Zuko without his scar. This isn't really a pet peeve, but I really prefer Zuko with his scar. I understand some AUs that would have Zuko without his scar, but I'd still like it if he was scarred in some way. It's kinda what makes Zuko Zuko. THIS!!! Yes! I also hate when it's on the wrong side of his face. I mean... yes... there is that ONE scene in "The Firebending Masters" where it's on the wrong side in the show, but I truly believe that was an accident. Don't put that freaking scar on the right half of his face! It belongs on the left, and he belongs scarred!

Hehe. I said it wasn't really a pet peeve and I do understand some AUs, like your own, would require him to not have his scar. Heck, even the fic I'm working on now, Prince of the Fire Nation, Zuko does not have a scar the first half of the story. But I'm going to scar him because, well, I just really prefer Zuko to be scarred in some way, even if it isn't his face. ;P

But I get that that's not nearly as fun as him having some kind of physical scar, haha.

Zuko smells like smoke or cinnamon? Man, I'd always pegged him as smelling like sandalwood thanks to fancy shampoo or something. ...Or at least I may be totally working that in to my fic at some point so that Katara can be healing his back and have a moment of zoning out all "mmmm, you smell fiiiiiiiiiine - WAIT WAIT WHAT".
Rapey Zuko is just so far out there it makes me curl my upper lip in disgust. Everybody knows dommey Katara is far superior anyway. >> <<
Though speaking of smells...
< Biology major > For me it's actually sort of important that characters just smell like themselves. It'd be a major plus if Katara accepted the fact that Zuko smelled like, well, Zuko, sweat and stink and all, and had a moment of 'not too bad actually'. BECAUSE it's actually been proven through SCIENCE! that females have a highly developed sense of smell when it comes to sniffing a dude's sweat. You can actually determine which alleles a potential mate has in a special subset by just how their sweat smells. It has to do with a group of things with immunology, called the Major Histocompatibility Locus. Basically it's how much your body is 'pre-programmed' to attack certain things. You don't want both mates bringing the same things to the table because then your kid doesn't get much benefit. But you also don't want things too far out there because your kid could end up with 'too thin' of coverage. Instead you want a goldilockslike comfortable middle so that your kid definitely will be covered for some things, but will have a chance to be covered for some new stuff too. And science has proven that women can sniff this out!! So if you pick up your boyfriend's sweaty-ass rank t-shirt and go 'mm, not so bad actually', you're totally MHC compatible, grats. .............and it makes me happy when Zutara are MHC compatible too. .................... .......... .......... OK DONE BIO MAJORING SORRY.

I've actually already written a smell scene for a future chapter of my own fic, and I joked about this a bit. Authors often describe characters' smells in strange, over the top ways. At the very least, everyone seems to feel the need to make them smell like something. Like, "Hm, what should Zuko smell like? What's a nice smell? ...jasmine! Done!" And you, the reader, are like, "Waitaminute, why does Zuko smell like jasmine?"
Characters don't always have to smell like something else. They can just smell like themselves.

The word "orbs." This isn't Zutara specific (I think more FMA writers use it than Zutarians), but it just really chaps my hide. ruh-roh, my texas is showing

Katara's cerulean blue orbs? XD
Here's an odd pet peeve of mine: expanding ridiculously long one-shots. It's when someone writes a long one or two-shot that has closure and everything, and s/he decides to expand on that one-shot in the same fic. Honestly, I kinda hate to keep reading on when I already had my closure. It's kinda like reading romances after they got together. Who wants to read about the actual marriage, unless it's an arranged marriage fic?
I completely understand expanding on drabbles and ficlets and small one-shots, but keeping it in the same story and just adding chapters? No. I'm not a fan of that. I've expanded on one-shots before but I always create a NEW story, explaining the one-shot or drabble was my inspiration. As a reader, I feel disoriented reading a continuation of a story (in the same collection) that already has its resolution. But that's just me and my pickiness.

I also generally lose interest in romance stories after the couple has gotten together, unless there's something really amazing going on, or the couple still hasn't reached proper closure. I dunno, I just really like the 'getting there' part. The actual 'getting together' part is something I look forward to and dread at the same time. I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels this way.
