Now this is interesting. It LOOKED as though it was going to turn into that 'good girl bad boy' trope at first glance, but of course Zuko became much less of a 'bad boy' as time went on. He was developing on his own, through his own experiences (Zuko Alone for instance), the means to connect to the good in the world, and connect to the people who suffered because of the FN. So Katara isn't 'his reforming healer' or some nonsense, she just drives him (death threat much?) into that particular mindset with what he already has, and he drives her to open up in her own way as well (TSR, and a good chunk of the third season). It's all very much human, and give-and-take. Mai, on the other hand, didn't really drive much of his inner morality- all she did was counter his anger on a surface level from what I could see. That would be all right if he wasn't already so messed up morally by the time he got to the Fire Nation. It would have been all right if he WAS in fact any other teen, the way they were portrayed in The Beach. But the fact is Zuko had so much more going on, so it's really hard to focus on such a relationship. Especially when you saw how he opened up in CoD. Yeah, Mai did seem cold and unwelcoming in many ways. Even when she was.. nice, she wasn't quite 'welcoming'. She just tried to gloss over his problems and make him forget they were there D8 (Still need a Maiko thread hahahaha)

and I just can't ship that. Oedipus was a tragedy for a reason. Maiko: I bailed in the first 10 seconds of seeing the deck of teh goodship Maiko. it was cold and unwelcoming - but then again Mai wouldn't care if I felt cold, just as long as I didn't burden her with my life story. I totally agree with you on the whole Kataang Oedipus thing. Again, I completely agree on the Maiko statement. There's Zuko trying to tell her about what's happening in his life and she's just like "I asked if you were cold..." I feel as though Katara, being the 'motherly type' figure that she is, would have at least listened to Zuko and talked to him while Mai sort of just tried to brush it off.

To be fair, Mai doesn't know how to deal with her own emotions, let alone anyone elses', but I think that Zuko needs someone who can deal with that sort of thing. He needs someone understanding who will listen to him, but he also needs to feel he can communicate properly to them rather than keeping secrets. Mai doesn't fit that bill at all because she made it clear in Book Three she didn't want to hear it. I don't know why she expected him to be so open with her in the Promise after she basically shut him down previously.

I addressed this in the Maiko thread, but it bears repeating: Zuko needed her care to be out in the open. And the fact that she wasn't able to do THAT- no matter what the reason may be- means that she just wasn't right for him, at least not at that point in time. I know that she probably INTENDED to care for him, but she just wasn't emotionally equipped to deal with Zuko's fire. It just.. wasn't compatible with her overly 'cold' demeanor.

Okay, I was a little nervous to post.. but I see that some people posted before they were "officially" accepted.. so if I get booted for this, I'll understand. Why do you ship Zutara?Because, like butter goes on bread, Zuko goes with Katara. It's a beautiful blend of opposites that has been told time and time again. It is perfection in every way. Their flawed personalities mixing together to make something romantic and once in a lifetime. Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice" is the first example I can think of that matches this relationship. Together, they build each other up, making one another better. That is how a relationship should be. Like icing on cake. When did you start liking Zutara?I can't be sure when I started to like it. It crept up on me, tackling me like a grizzly bear. I simple sat still and watched while it engulfed me in flames. Before I realized it, I was in the fandom, hyping with all the other Zutarians. Greenifyme is one of the people who influenced me to like it. I slowly came to realize that Zutara was the ultimate ship for me. Which, for better or worse, stole my heart and left me in a pile of ash when the show ended differently. Oh well, we can't have it all. Our Fanon is canon. What sets Zutara apart from other pairings in Avatar: The Last Airbender? It's flawed. Kataang and Maiko try too hard to be "perfect". I've never seen a relationship last that was like that. I've met plenty of people who were dating people like that and broke up after a few months. Zutara is also full of mystery and confusion, that alone makes the romance beautiful. Sukka is a cute, sweet, romance that works naturally. Zuko and Katara are constantly pushing each other to be better. I'm sort've out of brain juice, or these would be better. ROFL! Added note: Mai is freakin' dry as toast. I like when she actually has personality! D: Which is your favorite aspect of Zuko & Katara's relationship? The way they get along, when they get along. The dual-ninja attack was fantastic! And how they are always treating each other fairly, except when they fight like a couple, checheche. Is Zutara your OTP?You better believe it, foo'! I love them so much! I am better at describing this when I have been saturated in Zutara awesomeness, as it is, I'm sort've on a Marvel spree. What crossovers would you like with Zutara?Grrrg, I had a few answers for this... they are gone What fanworks have you done for this pairing?I wrote a 50K fanfic, which was lost on my old computer that died. What I did get up is on my fanfic page and it's terribly written and I'm thinking about just destroying it entirely. XD I also drew two pictures of them, because despite how much I love Zutara, I haven't done much fanwork for it. Oh, and there is a fanfic on my dA. It was written in 2008. I updated once a while ago... >> woops. WARNING: This fanfiction is badly written and may cause eyes to explode! READ AT YOUR OWN RISK! nami15.deviantart.com/art/The-Box-and-Letter-Zutara-85655581? Chapter One. This picture sucks. It's one of my first SAI digital art pictures >>; nami15.deviantart.com/art/Zutara-True-Love-is-Purple-288729958And this one is more recent... and done in some program, to which name, I can't remember. Sorry. XP nami15.deviantart.com/art/Zutara-In-a-Moment-322886218If you have to equate Zutara with a ( Disney or not ) fairy tale, which one would you choose ? o.o uhm... I can't choose! Disney is awesome. Zutara is awesome. Let's mesh them together and make an awesome sandwich that will explode the whole universe making everything awesome.

Why do you ship Zutara?
Seeing that lots of people are doing this,*shrugs* why not... When did you start liking Zutara?
Honestly, since the first episode. I was really young back then and I didn't even know what shipping was but I thought that Zuko and Katara seemed like the kind of people who would fit together perfectly .Aang just seemed to be a bit too immature to be with Katara and I honestly thought the Zutara was gonna be the official pairing.
What sets Zutara apart from other pairings in Avatar: The Last Airbender? In Kataang, Aang seems to draw too much support from Katara and looks up to her in a puppy crush type of way. Katara has also proven herself to be quite mature and understanding while Aang seems to be childish and naive. When they argue, Aang either gives up to make Katara happy or he'll run away. In Maiko, Mai is just too.... aloof, and bland. If they argue they'll just try and hide their emotions from each other.Zuko acts too dreary and emo around her.Angsty characters should not be paired up with even more angsty, dreary, emo people. They would just be a big pile of meh...
I'm sorry if I ramble too much...
Which is your favorite aspect of Zuko & Katara's relationship? The balance. They understand each other. Zuko needs someone with enough fire to rival his and yet at the same time calm him down. Also, the Zutara relationship in ATLA is the most developed in the series. We see both the characters go through changes that inevitably change their lives.Their enemies to allies to friends relationship makes everything better too. They also love each other enough to risk their lives for each other (on multiple times). They fit together without trying (unlike the other 2)
Is Zutara your OTP? Heck yeah! My first Fanon OTP
What crossovers would you like with Zutara?
Too many too count
What fanworks have you done for this pairing? I have a few drabbles I've saved on my computer but never posted them up... (too shy >___<)
I have enough zutara doodles and sketches in my sketchbook but I haven't posted those up either. There's a few works on DA that hint zutara but aren't really official. And my artwork is kinda bad so I'm not gonna post a link up here...

Lol, you're fine, nami. Making a post is the same as saying you want to join. Don't worry about it. I liked that you said 'Zutara are flawed'. I mean, Kataang and Maiko are flawed, but you can't help but get the feeling that you're not supposed to view them that way. Zutara are flawed in the way where you see their struggle, but also their ability to rise beyond that. They truly do complement each other in every way. ^^ Thanks. I'm always very cautious when I first join forums, I don't want to step on any toes, though that may happen anyway since my shoes are quite large. Exactly. Maiko and Kataang are just trying too hard. They are relationships that look all shiny on the outside, but inside they are flawed and being held together by shabby glue. I find the term "waiting to fall to pieces" very fitting for Kataang and Maiko. Yes! Zutara is a complementary flawed relationship that doesn't try to run and hide, they are exposed and they held each other over the issues instead of stuffing them away and ignoring it. *coughcoughMaikocoughcough* What fanworks have you done for this pairing? I have a few drabbles I've saved on my computer but never posted them up... (too shy >___<) I have enough zutara doodles and sketches in my sketchbook but I haven't posted those up either. Don't be afraid! =D You can only get better if you get other people's opinions. Granted, it can be very hard to take critique, but when critique is given with care and love, it's much easier to swallow. ^^ If you want to start out by showing a few people and then others, it works like that too. Oh, and if you are ever feeling crummy about your stuff, look at my old art (which is still on my dA) you will feel loads better. Also, no one got where they are by not taking critique. Every artist in any area of art (singing, dancing, writing, drawing, etc.) has dealt with critique, it can make your art better, if you allow it to. =D Welcome, btw! :3
